It's yet another land dispute in Morogoro
Another land conflict has erupted in Morogoro Region where villagers are up in arms accusing district leaders, of land grabbing and of favouring investors’ interests over natives’ rights.Speaking at a meeting with journalists in the village of Wami-Sokoine in Mvomero District recently, the vividly angry villagers alleged that a number of local and foreign investors who have been given large areas of land have not to date implemented any fruitful project.
The Village Land Committee Chairman Haroun Mtwango alleged that district leaders evict the villagers on grounds that they want to build public service institutions such as schools, sports pitch and dispensaries but later on, the district leaders end up building their own residential houses.
He also claimed that beacons previously agreed upon between the district leaders and the villagers have been removed by the district leaders who he says have installed their own beacons further squeezing out the villagers from their land.
Hamis Hassan and Anna Jeromimo, both residents of Mkambalani seconded the views of the Chairman and said the people are suffering while investors, businessmen and retired government officials share the more than 30,000 hectares of land acquired from the villagers.
“Before Mvomero became a council, we were living very peacefully here, but we are shocked that our own leaders have turned against us, colluding with businessmen and retired government officials to take our land,” the villagers claimed.
