Dr Mengi wants business ethics formulation to curb corruption
Tanzania
Private Sector Foundation (TPSF) Chairman Dr Reginald Mengi has advised
the foundation members and secretariat to formulate business code of
ethics in order to curb corruption in the country.
Speaking during the 15th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Friday evening in Dar es Salaam Dr Mengi said that corruption has become a serious problem that needed effective measures to halt it.
“As we know, corruption has two sides, a giver and a receiver. Sometimes, the environment of business people forces them to be involved in corruption practices in order to win favour for their businesses” he said.
He pointed out that the government cannot be blamed on daily basis for lack of business ethics; instead, TPSF in collaboration with other stakeholders should unite and formulate such codes that will help the government to fight corruption.
“There is a problem with the government in delaying to take actions against corrupt officials. The establishment of the business code of ethics will help to establish legally business environment and avoid corruption” he said.
According to him, such an effort will force the government to take serious and immediate measures to officials involved in corrupt practices while suggesting for the need to publish such corrupt official’s names on governments’ websites after facing the justice.
For his part, TPSF Executive Director Godfrey Simbeye said, the foundation is aiming at empowering local products and local businessmen to enable them improve national economy for the benefit of the majority citizens.
Simbeye said the foundation has tried its level best in creating conducive environment for local businessmen and investors at large by accelerating the national gas policy through advocacy and also empowering the country’s Small and Medium Entrepreneurs (SMEs).
He said the foundations main’s goal is to ensure that local citizens are empowered economically as this will allow them to effectively contribute to the country’s economic development.
Last month, TPSF appealed to SME’s to identify and fully utilise development opportunities found in their communities in order to spur development.
