TPDF denies involvement in DRC killing

Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF) has refuted reports that its st
aff have been involved in the recent killing of a Congolese, expounding that the Tanzanian soldiers in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are working in the central African country under the UN’s peace keeping mission and not as soldiers deployed by TPDF.

The TPDF’s statement came a day after some media outlets reported that Tanzanian soldiers have been involved in assaulting a civilian.

According to media reports, TPDF soldiers in DRC shot a civilian dead, something that resulted into a fight between the residents of the area who used traditional weapons and Tanzanians soldiers.

Briefing journalists yesterday in Dar es Salaam, TPDF acting spokesperson, Major Joseph Masanja said the reports are inaccurate because on the day in question, the members of the peacekeeping mission in DRC was on its way to Beni in the Eastern part of Congo where the most part of is dominated by rebels of Allied Democratic Force.

“TPDF would like to remind the public that all operations conducted in the DRC observed the United Nations (UN) rules and regulations and not TPDF’s commands as it has been reported. It should be well known that any activity concerning the peacekeeping operation in the DRC is under the UN and not TPDF,” he said.

He said while executing its day to day operations, the peace keeping force came across a barrier and as they were trying to get rid of it, a group of unknown people arrived at the scene but fortunately the DRC military force showed up just in the nick of time before any harm was done and escorted the Tanzanian soldiers to a safe destination.

“The TPDF would like to remind everyone that the presence of TPDF soldiers in DRC is part of UN’s peace keeping mission in the DRC, therefore TPDF soldiers are a part of the ‘Force Intervention’ brigade,” he emphasised.

The ‘Force Intervention’ brigade was formed under the United National Security Council resolution Number 2098 of March 28 2013, Section (9); among the soldiers within the task force are from Tanzania, South Africa and Malawi.
