The Coca Cola Company has donated 11.7 m/- to support the construction of a concrete fence at Ushindi Primary School, in Dar es Salaam, a move aimed at improving the environment of the school and curbing vandalism by unidentified persons during the night hours.

Speaking at the handover ceremony in Dar es Salaam recently, the Coca Cola Human Resources Director, Eric Ongora said that his company is committed to changing people’s lives.

Ongara told the guests at the ceremony that his company believed that pupils and teachers of the school were part of their customers as there was the market for Coca Cola products in the schools.

“Charity begins at home,” said the Human Resources Director adding that that the proximity of school and the Mikocheni Coca Cola plant was another reason to support the school.

Ongara revealed that Coca Cola had set three priorities to give back profits to community. He identified the priorities as engagement of women in economic empowerment and entrepreneurship.

He named other priorities as access to clean water, water conservation and recycling.

He also said that Coca Cola raised concern over issues related to well-being, such as active healthy living, education and youth development.

On his part, Suleymani Sagonhgo, the local government official from Mikocheni ward said the donation was part of the efforts made by leaders of the ward to convince companies to support the school.

Sagonhgo appealed to other companies to support the school which needs more than 240m/- to complete the construction of the concrete fence.

School Head teacher Elias Katunzi thanked Coca Cola Company for the donation and he promised to work together with Mikocheni ward leaders to make use of the fund.

Katunzi said that improving environment at the school was essential for both protection and change of lives of the school children.
