Simba, Yanga now eye ‘Nani Mtani Jembe 2’ tie

Soccer giants, Simba and Yanga, are already eyeing their ‘Nani Mtani Jembe 2’ tie to be held at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam next month.

While Yanga have given their players a 10-day leave, Simba have released their players for two weeks prior to starting preparations for the mouth-watering match.

The sides will lock horns on December 13 in the tie coordinated by their main sponsors, Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) through Kilimanjaro Premium Lager brand.

It will be the second time in a row since the ‘Nani Mtani Jembe’ campaign started last year.

Simba won the inaugural campaign after beating Yanga 3-1 at the same venue last year.

According to Yanga secretary general, Beno Njovu, the Jangwani Street side has already started training but will officially start preparations when their first choice players arrive.

Simba information officer, Humphrey Nyasio, said his squad has been given two weeks to rest and the players are expected to assemble on November 21 for training.

'A match against Yanga is very competitive, so, we have to be well prepared. But we believe we will emerge winners, we know what we are doing,'Nyasio said.

He also urged Simba fans to support their team during the campaign.
Kilimanjaro Premium Lager manager, George Kavishe, asked the two sides’ fans, especially Simba, to pull their socks in the campaign to enable the Msimbazi side to collect more in their ‘money league’ against Yanga.

Simba had, until Wednesday this week, collected 17,900,000/- compared to Yanga who had 62, 100,000/- while on Tuesday, Simba had 20,115,000/- while Yanga had 59,885,000/-.

Watimanya said in Dar es Salaam yesterday that she expects to do well as she sufficiently prepared for this event, supported by Miss Tanzania organizing committee.

The local beauty queen said that she has been in a training, aware of the level of the challenge she faces in London.
“I know it is a tough competition as I am going to meet a lot of contesters who are appreciated beauties. There are special things which belong to me and they could make me a winner.

“I call upon the fans to give me their support as I am going to represent the country, not on my own as an individual, as their support means a lot to me,” she said.

She declared that Tanzania beauty queens should watch and follow up on the competition as they will learn a lot on how to become winners in local and international competitions.

Hashim Lundenga, the director of Lino International Agency who are also organizers of Miss Tanzania, said yesterday his committee had already finished bringing together trip requirements to London.
During the training Watimanya was learning from her teachers, who have expressed their confidence that she would well fly the national flag.

“We are making everything good for our queen and we believe she is in a position to make history in London,” said Lundenga.
A few days ago Happiness’ mother blamed the Miss Tanzania committee for poor preparations for her daughter as they failed to give her various required materials.

The beauty queen’s mother said that the committee failed even to give the young contestant the 5m/- for shopping as required in the contract.

“Even for introduction shooting they said it is too expensive but me as mother I decided to give my daughter 1m/- down payment as I want her to win and not get ashamed in London,” the lady intoned.

Sitti steps down, Lilian Kamazima new Miss Tanzania

Stop gap Miss Tanzania Sitti Mtevu has resigned for what she called being sick and tired of allegations which the social media and press were leveling against her.

Miss Tanzania organisers Hashim Lundenga of Lino International Agency said in Dar es Salaam yesterday that Sitti wrote a resignation letter to his committee on November 5.

Lundenga said Sitti’s runner-up Lilian Kamazima (18) who was also Miss Arusha had been promoted to be the new Miss Tanzania.

Lundenga said that Sitti’s letter stated that she had decided to step down because of the accusations leveled on her by the public and the press.

“We have accepted her decision. We do not have reasons to refuse her although her decision has shocked us,” Lundenga said.

“Always we have being insisting on our regulations and we will keep on making sure that no one is violating them,” said Lundenga.

Lundenga specified that in the letter, Sitti didn’t mention whether the allegations were true or false.

“We are happy also to have Lilian and from now we will give her every support as Miss Tanzania,” he emphasized.

On her side, Lillian who accompanied the Miss Tanzania Committee in the press conference said that she was happy to replace Sitti and promised to represent Tanzania at the Miss World contest well next year.

After Sitti was crowned last month, beauty fans leveled complaints about her, saying that he was over-aged. Some people even published what were given as her credentials such as her passport and driving license showing an actual age of 25 years.

The now defunct Miss Tanzania refuted the reports claiming that she was only 23 years old.

This is the first time for a crowned Miss Tanzania to resign since the Miss Tanzania beauty contest was reintroduced in the country in 1994.

FAO commits to further help small-scale agribusinesses

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) office in Tanzania has in the last four years provided technical support to small scale agribusiness entrepreneurs, through its Southern Highlands Food Security (SHFS) programme under a USD5m, German fund.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Guardian recently, FAO Tanzania Country Representative, Diana Tempelman, said the support focused on assisting the Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT) initiative to boost agro-production and processing industries along the Dar es Salaam-Mbeya corridor.

She was speaking during the UN week celebrations to mark the 69th anniversary on the establishment of the United Nations.

Tempelman also said that further efforts were made to link farmers with other value chain players such as traders and agro-food processors through the recently established collaborative pact with the Rabobank/NMB Foundation.

“FAO is now looking into ways to enhance men, women and young farmers’ access to agricultural financing. Under this agreement with NMB, FAO will continue to provide technical assistance to increase the productivity of rice and cassava crops, linking producers to agribusinesses to increase their access to markets, while the NMB will be responsible for building farmers’ financial literacy skills and group management skills to become more credit-worthy and obtain formal loans by the end of the four year programme,” she said.

She underscored that during the coming years FAO will further facilitate producers and formal agribusinesses to capitalise on market opportunities in the existing regional communities such as the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and East Africa Community (EAC) of which Tanzania has been a long serving member.

She noted that the Agricultural Sector Development Strategy objectives include creating an enabling and favourable environment for improved productivity and profitability in the agricultural sector and increasing farm income to reduce income poverty and ensure household food security.

Tempelman highlighted FAO’s continued support to Agricultural Sector Line Ministries to elaborate a Sector-Wide Agricultural Development Plan, given that “the Agricultural Sector Development Strategy (ASDS) provides a comprehensive blue print for advancing the sector and specifying how the sector will achieve MKUKUTA and MKUZA targets,” she said.

Global Entrepreneurship Week to foster innovation, creativity set for this year

In a continued effort to empower young and upcoming entrepreneurs in Tanzania, the Global Entrepreneurship Week in Tanzania team will host yet, another GEW and this year in a roll, the third edition of Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) activities, under the theme ‘Innovation and Creativity at the Market place’.

The event is considered to be the largest celebration of innovators and job creators, where start-ups are motivated and encouraged to drive economic growth and for the best expansion of human welfare.

The global initiative kicked off in 2008, launched by former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Carl Schramm, the president and CEO of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation.

“With an increasing rise in unemployment rates in Tanzania, embracing and promoting entrepreneurship is what will raise the country to that next level of being an economic giant.

Having conducted two other GEW events in Tanzania which focused on Awakening Entrepreneurship potential in 2012 and Access to Financial Resources in 2013, this year we are concentrating on Innovation and Creativity at the market place--providing creative solutions to the consumers and thus increasing value proposition of entrepreneurs,” said Lillian Secelela Madeje, Managing Director of Professional Approach Development and Organising Team for GEW Tanzania yesterday.

She also noted that GEW Tanzania is part of a global initiative within an international network of over 140 countries dedicated to advance and empower entrepreneurs across the globe.

“From Zanzibar to the shores of Lakes Victoria and Tanganyika, in every corner of the land, we want to make a rallying call to all entrepreneurs to bring innovative ideas to the market place,” she added.

The one week event set for November 17 to 23, this year is looking to spark entrepreneur’s minds in delivering cutting edge solutions at the marketplace, she said.

This year’s event has seen great collaboration and partnership from the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange, ZAYEE, KINU Hub, Professional Approach Development, Trinity Group East Africa and Africa 2.0 Tanzanian Chapter.

“The weeklong events will aim to celebrate, encourage, promote and enable entrepreneurship through training and workshops, mentorship and inspiration from entrepreneurs such as Mercy Kitomari of Nelwas Gelato, Mboni Masimba of The Mboni Show, Jennifer Bash of Alaska Tanzania and so many more,” she said.

GEW Tanzania events and activities will showcase what thousands of organisations already do to help foster a culture that embraces innovation, imagination and creativity.

“Each day will be dedicated to a specific segment group from women in entrepreneurship, youth in entrepreneurship, agriculture and entrepreneurship, a meet up between start ups and venture capitalist firms and it will culminate with a Three-day Start Up weekend event,” she added.

Carl Schramm, one of the founders of GEW, president and CEO of Kauffman Foundation said: “Global Entrepreneurship Week will be happening in almost every country in the world five years from now.

What this means is that probably half a billion people in one week will think about a different career for themselves. They will see in GEW a moment, a second, a day, a lecture, a TV show, a program
me, when they reassess what they are going to do with their lives”
